N-p-Elliott FW17
Scottish designer, Nicholas Elliott, showcased his “identity” theme with his fashion line during New York Fashion Week: Men’s FW17. For the last two seasons, Elliott promoted men’s clothing that produced a feeling of unity and differentiation all at the same time.
This years line contained a plethora of emblems and badges that screamed, “I AM”! One patch read “consciousness”, and another one displayed “mellius”, meaning better in Latin.
Drawing inspiration from his culturally mixed background, Elliott beautifully created a non-homogenous world. Themes taken from the fantasy film, Orlando, as well as sci-fi epic, Dune, could be seen throughout the show. Each presentation was a testimony to Elliot’s world of mixed-raced, non-homogenous people.
The designer was able to bring about a unique and varied structure with his clothes through contrasting themes. Height was one such contrast that reiterated his “be unique” style. Tall male models walked down the runway, all the while displaying different skin tones and hairstyles.
While the models themselves were quite differentiated, it was Elliott’s designs that touted his "unique identity" message. The most vivid display of contrast appeared when a male model, wearing a military-style jacket stood beside another male model sporting a faux-Astrakhan coat.
Bold colors were also exhibited to further accentuate the non-homogenous scene Elliot sought to bring forth to the world. Tangerine, hunter green, gray and gold were all eye catching selections that sparked interest.
Elliott was able to use controversial themes and bring them together in a harmonious loop. While the 2017 N-p-Elliott collection was quite comprehensive, it also proved to be rather distinctive by successfully supplying the perfect mix of body types, styles, and colors, which ultimately gave the entire showcase a truly diverse feel.
