Anniesa Hasibuan SS17

Anniesa Hasibuan paved the road for diversity in New York Fashion Week SS17. Not only is she the first Indonesian designer to show a collection at NYFW, she is also the first designer to feature a collection in which every model wore a hijab. After showing successfully in London and Paris, New York editors and fashion-lovers alike were excited to see the history-making designer present her wearable art.

Incredibly ornate tunics, kimonos, trench coats, pant suits and floor-length full skirts made the designer's SS17 collection eye-catching with every ensemble that was sent down the runway. Colors ranged from metallic golds and silvers to deep reds, but Anniesa Hasibuan did not forego the light pink trend shown by other iconic designers. She featured monochromatic ensembles in the color as well as in other light colors.

While the garments spoke for themselves through embellishments, large jeweled necklaces and colored satin sashes accompanied almost every look. Each ensemble was completed with a satin or chiffon hijab in various neutral solid colors, making the collection iconic and a huge step forward for diversity in the fashion industry.

Although most of the audience was not muslim, the show finished with an overwhelming standing ovation, an achievement few designers have experienced.
